Then, on the way home one day, my phone rang while I was riding. In a moment of silliness and mild melancholy some months ago, I had aquired a "vintage" ringtone -- the 1984 classic Jump, by Van Halen. As the all-familiar, heavily produced, opening synth chords rang out on my phone, I felt a renewed vigour, and was compelled rhythmically to keep time with the phone while pedaling, rather than to actually answer the call.
"Hey", thought I, "this 80s Rock could work!"
So, this morning, desperate for some new inspiration during the cold, dark ride to school, I bid farewell to Toots, and put on a Van Halen playlist instead. The steady beat and predictable melodies provided just the right support for my cadence while cycling, and I arrived at work smiling and on time.
