I had the privilege of working with a student this morning who just arrived in Canada last week. "No English", this six-year-old told me, as she waved her hand dismissively at my
attempt to get her to come up with a sentence for our Language Experience exercise. But I just kept yakking at her and chatting with the others in the small group until finally she decided on "I am happy about the party." (It's 100s day today, and the Grade One and Two students are in the throes of celebrating 100 of everything, great fun!)
We cut up the sentence and scrambled and reassembled the words five times, until she was singing and clapping with me at the recognition of at least four new words!
What amazing courage these little ones have, to attack each new day in a foreign language, culture and climate with strange new adults making all sorts of demands on their cognition and temperment.
