I used an Alphasmart with a student for the first time today. WOW, was he ever engaged--what I could do with a few of these in my classroom on a regular basis!
In my effort to integrate effective use of technology into my program next year, I am on the quest for some laptops and/or iPads. Our board is launching wifi in all schools as of Sept 2012. The idea is that students can “BYOD” (“Bring Your Own Device”).
Trouble is that I work in a school where there ain’t many Ds to B!
I would love my students to be able to create mind and concept maps electronically, listen to stories read aloud, play computer games that would consolidate basic skills in spelling and math, and have a tablet to type up letters, emails, stories and other texts on. Ideally, there would be 6 of these, one per group, so that each day or week a different person in the group has first dibs on the electronic device during my Literacy Block or other instructional time when it might be appropriate to use these. 5-6 laptops or iPads would also allow me to create a “centre” students could work at during some instructional periods, allowing me to work with smaller groups.
Do you have a previously enjoyed (but still in excellent working condition!!!) laptop or iPad with a protective case and all necessary cords and headphones you might be willing to donate, or would you like to contribute to the purchase of one or more for my classroom? If so, please contact me!
