Honduras Pt IV - Miami Airport

2/12/2011

So much for heading to the beach!  The weather was lousy, and our 2.5 hour layover turned into a 1.75 hour scramble from one end of the airport to the other, and then back again!

Upon arrival at the airport, we decided to go for a nice leisurely lunch (it was still breakfast time, really, but having been up for 7 hours already, we were famished), so we found
ourselves a burger joint that also offered some vegetarian options for Mommy.  Upon finishing our meal, we headed out into the terminal to seek gate D-11, which we had been told was the gate for our next flight, departing in 40 minutes.

Turns out you have to take a train to that section of gates!!!  So, we lugged the baggage up the escalator and onto the Skytrain. The airport train in Miami provides an excellent view of the many aircraft, and it was exciting to be so close to so many planes.
We made the other terminal section in decent time, so we stopped at the Haagan Daas Kiosk across from Gate D-11 for an ice cream. A dazzling array of waffle, chocolate and other cones awaited us, but the boys chose the usual plain old sort to hold their chocolate mint concoction. (The African-American server chuckled to himself as he filled our order, because the cone we wanted was “whitebread”, as he called it.  I smiled back - I don’t mind being poked fun at because of my skin colour.  On the topic of culture… I was interested to observe the vast number of people speaking Spanish.  It reminded me of Montreal – a culture of two languages.  The boys also picked up on this analogy, wondering why Spanish, and not French, was the second language here; it was an ideal opportunity for a quick geography and history lesson.)

Upon arrival at D-11, we found a suspiciously empty seating area.  Soon thereafter, an announcement came over the PA. Our gate, as it turned out, had been changed to the other end of the terminal.  So, it was back to the Skytrain, though considerably slower, with more prodding required.  (The boys’ lack of sleep was beginning to manifest itself, and Simon was complaining of a tummy ache!)

Somehow we made it, though, and are now cruising at 35 000 ft.  The boys are asleep (Alex before takeoff), and I am about to try to catch a few more Zzzz myself, or at least unwind a bit to a little Mozart while the unhappy toddler a few rows back wails in the background.
