Ortega

"You are a pioneer, Ortega, and like any other pioneer, your place in society is somewhat unclear.  You are neither fully a part of the world into which you were born nor fully a part of the world into which you have come to live in.  It is unquestionably an extraordinary adventure, but one that is fraught with challenges and difficulties."

As predicted, today was a particularly splendid day!  I have started reading a Silver Birch contender called "Ortega", and it is phenomenal!!!  LOVING this book!!

And then, my passports arrived for the Honduras trip.

AND, I got a surprise in the mail:  A CD rom with 57 photos of me and my mother, taken by her man friend in the decade before she died, and transferred this past month into JPEG format!!!  Click below and to check out a sample:
To top it off, I got a VM that my sunglasses are ready for pick up.  Now I can fly without going blind, lol!

Let's hope the bliss lasts throughout the weekend.  :D

Reconnections

Something fabulous is about to happen, I can sense it!

Today, we recconnected with a refugee from Afghanistan we had been volunteering with, and who suddenly and inexplicably fell off the radar about six weeks ago.  We were very concerned for him, and not sure what to do.  Finally, today, we saw him again.  Turns out he had lost his cel phone, and with it, our number to return our calls.  Happily, the good folks at CCVT were able to reconnect us, and this evening, we had a lovely reunification.  Even the boys were happy to see him again.

Then, I got home and found an email from a long lost mentor of mine, a very influencial person from my past.  It was an absolute blessing to be reunited in this pleasantly surprising manner.

My Omi taught me that good things come in threes, so I am relishing the first two, and looking forward to the third.  :)

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

It's a question I have been comtemplating for the past several months, as I consider what to do next year (and the year after that, etc., etc.)  You see, I've had the incredible privilege of teaching pre-service teacher education at a University this year.  Most of my days involve mental stimulation with other intelligent adults, no recess duty, no counting pizza money and lots of excitement and interaction with new teachers as they launch into the profession.

But soon is coming a time when

Another Thing Vera Can't Do!

Just when I thought I had pretty much mastered a basic skill level on the classical guitar and could focus on flying and prepping for PSTAR, nopes, another surprise!  My guitar lesson this afternoon almost killed me!!!  Four notes together is too many notes, in my humble opinion.  First of all it takes way to much effort to figure them all out, secondly, my fingers don't reach like that and thirdly, well... there is no thirdly.  I just can't do it.  Argh!

What's the Big Idea?

12/9/2010

So, we've been working on "rich", "meaty", "BIG" ideas with the Grade 3s.

We're trying to move beyond the "this is about a bunk bed", or "this is about an airport".  And today, it finally seemed to be coming together!!!  As one of the teachers I work with was reviewing some of the picture book covers, trolling for big ideas-she was making an anchor chart-- one of the kids came up with this one:
"to keep a strong soul when bad things happen"  (The book was "A Chair for My Mother", which the teacher had read aloud to them a few days earlier.)

WOW!  Cool!  Really neat to see the lightbulbs go on!!!

Santa Claus Doesn't Live Forever

Dec 5 we leave out our shoes for St Nick to fill with chocolate (if we've been good!)
Shoes for St Nicolas
Ahhh... we knew this day was coming, but it seems to be approaching sooner than we expected it to!  This evening as we were getting ready for bed, Alex asked me about Santa.  Specifically, he wanted to know why some people were saying Santa wasn't real.

"Who says he isn't real?", I wondered aloud.

Apparently a friend of a friend had started this rumour that Santa wasn't real.  Simon piped up at this point and noted that it couldn't
possibly be true that Santa didn't exist.

Simon's shoes stuffed with loot
After all, he reasoned, how could parents get all those gifts organized in one night?

We narrowly averted the trauma of the cold, harsh reality this time, but I know it's coming... this just may be the last "innocent" Christmas!
