I have often been asked about why I choose to live in Mimico, sleepy little west-end fifedom, one Go train stop west of Exhibition... This morning's event at Mimico Baptist Church at the corner of Hillside and George provides a perfect illustration:
As of 7 a.m., early morning commuters and their children began trickling into the church, greeting neighbours, and stopping briefly for a home made muffin and some fruit before heading over to a table in the corner to sign a petition, and then grabbing their kids to head back out and on to the daycare, work, etc.
Nicole and her daughter Renata have been with us here in Canada for some time....

Renata attending school here, and her mother Nicole volutneering in the community... but they just found out they are being deported back to St Vincent! (Apparently the guy they hired to do their immigration paperwork screwed up somewhere.) Anyway, within 72 hours, the residents' association had organized this breakfast and petition signing at a local church. Emails were sent, distribution lists initated and a facebook page launched. And, on a Wednesday morning in April, almost everyone in the neighbourhood integrated a stop at the church to grab a bite, sign a petition, and lend a few words of encouragement to mother and daughter into their morning routine.
And that, my friends, is why I choose to live in Mimico!
